I’ve always wanted longer eyelashes. My stubby, fine eyelashes require quite a bit of effort to even be noticeable – and it takes falsies or extensions to score dramatic lashes.

Over the years, I’ve tried everything.

I can remember layering 2-3 different mascaras every day in college to fake some length and was thrilled the day eyelash primer came out and made my life easier (and my lashes longer).

But, now, there are eyelash growth serums that will safely, easily nourish eyelashes and reduce breakage and fallout, while also encouraging new hair growth.

The result?

Thicker, longer, healthier eyelashes.

Game on.

Are Eyelash Growth Serums Safe?

Bottom line: not all of them. Some were actually first used to help those who lost all lashes due to chemotherapy treatments or severe glaucoma. The results were so impressive, they opened them up to the regular market.

The problem? When you stop using them, your lashes fall back out. And, some people have even reported serious side effects and others have said it actually changed their eye color.

Um. No thanks.

I kind of like my eyes and would rather not permanently damage them for longer lashes.

(It’s tempting, tho).

So, I’ve rounded up the best, safest, most natural growth serums for you here and I won’t be mentioning any of the ones that have, shall we say, scarier reputations.

This means, no serums that use Isopropyl Cloprostenate. Even still, be your own judge and stop using and return any product that does not work or is painful in any way.

Also, affiliate links used, meaning I’ll receive a small commission if you purchase a product through my link at no cost to you – except for the Monat Growth Serum. I am not a Monat partner, I have just used it in the past and liked the results.

The Safest Eyelash Growth Serums:

1. Borboleta Lash Serum:

eyelash growth serum

This is my newest eyelash serum and I’m really happy with it. I didn’t have any irritation at all and I noticed some growth. I love that this one is cruelty free, fragrance-free, and clinically tested to be safe.

The serum works by using biotin, keratin, and peptides, all known for improving hair growth and strength, as well as plant-based stem cells and pumpkin seed extract, to promote natural hair growth.

A great way to try the serum is in this cute kit that includes everything you need to take care of your lashes, like lash cleaner, a lash cleaning brush, under eye gels and enough serum to last 1-2 months. Or, just spring for the lash serum, so that you can maximize that lash growth, baby!

If you are interested in trying their serum, they kindly offered a 15% discount with code ERICA15!

How Do You Use It? I used it once a day at night, before I got to bed.

Check out Borboleta Lash Serum here.

2. Eye Wonder Lash & Brow Enhancing Serum

This is the one that I used to use. My cousin introduced me to it when she was a Monat rep.

While this product is not 100% natural, there is a long list of ingredients that it does not have, which you can read more about here. Most importantly, it doesn’t have the harmful ingredients that have led to many other brands of lash serums getting sued. Yay.

How To Use It: The directions say to use it 2x a day, but I only use it at night. You just run the little brush along your lash line, go to sleep, and wake up with a little more lash every day.

Is It Sensitive? I have Sjogren’s Syndrome, an autoimmune disease that effects the body’s ability to produce tears and so my eyes are as sensitive as they can get. This one doesn’t bother me unless I put on too much and it actually runs into my eyes. At that point, water bothers me, so I chock this up to user error.

I do find that I don’t like to do it every day, but I get results even when I am inconsistent.

This is one of the more affordable serums, too, at under $60, while many others you’ll find are three digits and up. You can’t buy Eye Wonder in stores. I buy mine from Mandi Taylor and this is her site.

I won’t receive any commission by recommending this to you; I just genuinely like this one and Mandi is my go-to girl.

3. Lash Food Phyto-Medic Natural Eyelash Enhancer

eyelash growth serum

I used this one before Eye Wonder. I didn’t experience any sensitivity with this one, either.  Lash Food is the only ecocert certified lash enhancer. Infused with their Phyto-Medic complex, the LashFood eyelash enhancing system is designed to deliver nutrients to feed lashes with powerful natural ingredients.

Does it Work? I used Lash Food when my lashes were very short, frail and falling out. Very scary stuff. I did feel that this helped stop the breakage. I did see some growth with it and was very excited, but I felt like it could be more.

I wanted MORE LASHES.

How Do You Use It? The same as Eye Wonder. At night. Before you go to bed.

How Much? It’s more expensive than Eye Wonder, but less than big hitters like Latisse. It’s available at Ulta and other retailers, making it easy to get your hands on.

You can also try this Lash Food set – which includes one month of the serum and one month of the collagen primer. You’d apply the primer in the AM, before mascara, for an instant boost.

DIY Eyelash Growth Serums:

Guess what, you can also make your own eyelash growth serum! Like anything else, you will be able to save money (and ensure the quality and purity of ingredients) by doing it yourself.

I know you love DIY beauty as much as I do, because my posts on DIY rosewater, DIY body scrubs, and DIY face masks for acne are popular, too.

Here are a few different recipes for DIY eyelash growth serums:

4. Castor Oil:

Buy super pure, organic castor oil and some little application wands and you’re ready to go!

Use: Use it the same way as the serums above, every night, before bed. You can also apply to brows if you like!

You should start seeing results in about 30 days or so.

Tip: Be careful not to apply too much or it will sting if it gets in your eyes. Luckily, castor oil is super natural and it won’t cause any damage except being uncomfortable for a minute.

5. Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil:

Shea Moisture is one of my favorite clean beauty lines. This Jamaican Castor Oil is super nutrient rich and believed to have higher concentrations fo the beneficial qualities in castor oil.

So, that should mean it will be even more effective at encouraging hair growth. Right? Let’s hope so.

Use: Apply just like regular castor oil. Every night, before bed. Apply for at least a month.

Here’s a review of someone who used this particular oil and saw results. They aren’t groundbreaking, but something is better than nothing!

6. Wellness Mama’s DIY Eyelash Growth Serum:

This concoction is created by Wellness Mama, guru of all things natural living.

Her recipe combines castor oil with emu oil, coconut oil and vitamin e – all four ingredients are total powerhouses for hair growth and strength.

I would bet her recipe would be highly effective.

The trick would just be sourcing all of these ingredients first.

Use: Same application as castor oil. Apply at night.

7. Twist Me Pretty’s Eyelash Growth Serum

Abby runs the blog Twist Me Pretty, an absolute paradise for all things hair.

So, of course, she has an awesome DIY eyelash growth serum tutorial for you, too.

This recipe combines argan oil, almond oil, vitamin e oil and castor oil – another combination of incredible ingredients known to promote strong healthy hair and skin!

In fact, I would guess these would show a little love the skin around the eyelashes, too.

But How Do They Work?

Curious how they work?

Well, first you want to understand a little bit about the eyelash growth cycle.

Eyelashes can grow faster and slower based on different conditions, such as your diet, internal health, and even how much water you drink.

Also, over time, eyelashes can become damaged and weak from excessive product usage that strip important oils and from washing your face with face washes that have harsh or drying chemicals.

Once you start trying to grow stronger, thicker, healthier eyelashes, you’ll want to embrace the eyelash life cycle, which can take up to three months to restore and reach full potential.

You can help boost this growth cycle by using eyelash growth serums that nourish and moisturize the hair and hair follicles, using gentle face washes and skin care products, using mascaras that have moisturizing properties (see below) and taking supplements that can boost growth from the inside out.

I drink a scoop of this collagen in my tea each night and it’s done more for my skin and hair than anything. There are also hair vitamin supplements that have extra amounts of the nutrients responsible for healthy hair growth.

Now, once you get those eyelashes growing – don’t forget to up your mascara game.

I love mascara, so I’ve written quite a bit about them – in fact, I even wrote you a mascara quiz that will give you a customized result! Take the quiz here and see what you think about which mascara it recommends.

Or, skip the line and buy the most incredibly lengthening mascara I have ever tried. It is so serious, my eyelashes even feel heavier when I use it. Crazy.
