One of my favorite skin care tips is red light therapy. It’s by far been the thing that has given me the most results. I love my serums, masks, and other potions for softer, smoother skin, but for really seeing results with fine lines and skin texture, even breakouts, red light has been the best for me. I love seeing all the new, cool red light face masks coming out. I’m still using my old favorite from CurrentBody, but that hasn’t stopped me from researching the new ones to compare. So, if you’re looking to try out red light therapy, I thought I’d round up the best ones for you, too. But first, let’s talk a little bit about red light, why it’s so great, and how it works.
What’s the deal with red light therapy?
Probably my favorite part of red light masks is that they’re totally painless. I haven’t had that experience with any of the other types of skincare tools I’ve used over the years, and I’ve tried a lot of them, from the one that sent a little electric current through the skin, to the ones that looks like a little spiky roller and it pushes tiny little needles into the skin (i don’t recommend it – not worth the results).
But, even more importantly, I see a difference. While I am fine with aging now and have embraced the idea that healthy aging is a gift (after all, what’s the alternative?), I’m also interested in taking care of myself and my skin, for today, and for my future functional independence. I want to be as healthy and youthful for as long as possible. That’s why I love red light therapy masks. It’s a needle free, totally painless, and effective method for healthy skin with a youthful glow.
How does red light therapy work?
- LED Light Emission: Red light therapy masks utilize red LED lights, typically with wavelengths between 630 and 700 nanometers.
-
Photobiostimulation: When the skin absorbs the red light, it triggers photobiostimulation, a process where the light energy is converted into signals that stimulate skin cells.
- Increased Collagen and Elastin:Red light can boost the production of collagen and elastin, proteins that are crucial for skin’s strength and elasticity.
- Reduced Inflammation:Red light can help reduce inflammation in the skin, which can be beneficial for conditions like acne and wound healing. Also great for skin conditions that cause redness and inflammation in the face.
- Accelerated Wound Healing:By stimulating cell activity, red light therapy can promote faster healing of wounds and other skin injuries, including pimples, acne, etc.
- Other Benefits:Some masks also emit near-infrared light (around 700 or more nanometers), which can further promote wound healing and reduce chronic inflammation.
-
Targeted Effects: Some masks also offer blue light, which is believed to penetrate less deeply and can kill some bacteria and reduce oil gland activity, potentially helping with acne. Other masks now have cryo options, or cooling options, which is incredible for inflammation, dark undereye circles, stiffness in the face, etc. I love my ice roller, so a combo cooling and red light mask sounds AMAZING.
- Quick and Easy: Red light masks are typically worn for 10 to 20 minutes at a time, once a day, or as often as you like, and results can vary depending on the device, frequency of use, and individual skin conditions.

Best Red Light Therapy Face Masks:
1. CurrentBody LED Red Light Face Mask:
This is the one I’ve been using for a couple years now and I’m a super fan. They’ve made updates like more light bulbs with even deeper red light therapy and added neck pieces (under the chin!!), making it even better. I wish I could get the updated version, but these are pricey, so I’ll be using this one as long as I can. I love that it has a flexible material that folds around my face. It’s comfortable, easy to wear, and relaxing. I can’t see very well when I wear it, so I do use this as a chance to lay down and relax.

2. Shark CryoGlow LED Face Mask:
This is a newer mask on the market and I am SO interested in trying this! The undereye cooling combo looks amazing. It also offers red and blue LED light options and comes in two colorways. Shark really gave this one all the goodies and the reviews are coming in hot by very happy customers. If I was buying a new red light face mask right now, this is the one I’d be most tempted to buy.

4. Dr. Dennis Gross DRx SpectraLite FaceWare Pro:
Dr. Dennis Gross has some of my favorite skincare products. Very concentrated solutions that get targeted results. His face mask is one of the cooler ones on the market, IMO. It has a firmer shape, so it’s not as bendy and flexible. It also has dual red and blue light therapy as well. There are three treatment options, too, for more customization. The mask I have is just on or off, so I like that the newer masks have more options.

5. Solawave Wrinkle Retreat Light Therapy Face Mask:
Solawave has quite a few highly rated, award winning skincare products, so no surprise then that they’ve released their own Solawave red light mask. I really like the soft pink look of this and the design. It has all the goodies: blue light, red light, 10 minute treatment. I couldn’t find exact numbers on the LEDs, but it looks very similar to the one I have.

6. AFFORDABLE OPTION: NVBOTY LED Face Mask with 3 Colors:
Do these face masks need to be hundreds of dollars? That’s a question I ask myself, too, especially when I see masks like this that come in under $100 and have a lot of the same features. The only way to know is to try them, right? This is a highly reviewed, more affordable option that uses red, orange, and blue light – for different levels of impact on the skin. Also, I like that you have two colorway options, black or pink. It’s flexible, easy to wear, and has options. Reviewers love it, and they probably also love that they only paid a fraction of the price of the other masks.

*****
I’m a big fan of red light therapy and I love that we have more options than ever before. I’m exploring the idea of trying red light devices for other areas of the body, too. I’ve seen some dentists recommending it for head colds, sore throats, and I’ve heard of people using red light to help the body heal other areas as well. Could red light be this incredible recovery tool beyond youthful skin? Maybe! One thing I love about it: it won’t hurt to try.
