8 Best Oral Health & Teeth Care for Less Cavities

oral care for less cavities

Are you tired of getting cavities, sore gums, or symptoms of dry mouth? I’ve been trying out tons of products over the years, for both myself and my kids, to find the ones that work the best for eliminating these issues. For me, I have a tendency to get cavities, and always have throughout my life, despite being diligent with my routine. But, I’ve learned a lot more as I’ve gotten older about what can cause one person to have more of a likelihood of having these issues than another, and it doesn’t have as much to do with diet as we were told as kids.

Now, with more research and advancements in understanding the oral microbiome, more products are emerging that are maximizing our mouth’s ability to heal itself, including our teeth. Not all cavities and issues can be resolved this way, but you can absolutely improve your oral health and reduce the amount of issues that you have to fix the old fashioned way (hint: drilling and filling). We are still sticklers for showing up for our 6-month cleanings, so I don’t do any of this in replacement of that important mouth care, but in addition to, for the best possible chances for healthy teeth and gums. Every time we leave our six-month check-up with a clean bill of health and no cavities, it feels like a small victory. I don’t know about you, but I’ll take all the wins I can get.

8 Best Oral Health & Teeth Care Products:

  1. Burst Electric Care Toothbrush – We all switched to these over a year ago and no regrets. I really love it and we all agree they’re the best electric toothbrushes we’ve used. I also like the base that you charge it on. It comes apart for easy cleaning, which is so great. We replace our brush heads about every month, but other than that, they’re still going strong. They’ve already outlasted other electric toothbrushes we’ve bought in the past.
  2. GuruNanda Whitening Mouthwash– This has xylitol, which really helps with cavity prevention and tooth healing, as well as baking soda, which strengthens gums and reduces sensitivity. The top doubles as a cup, too. It’s my favorite mouthwash I’ve used yet and I do like that it has a whitening ingredient, because I’ve been working on whitening my teeth without harsh ingredients.
  3. Elementa Nano Silver Mouthwash – Amazing stuff that stopped cavities with my daughter. Only downside is the price and it can leave a yellowish cast on the teeth. The taste is also the best of any mouthwash I’ve ever tried. If kids will use it, you know it’s good.
  4. Waterpik Water Flosser – Waterpiks can help immensely with getting rid of cavities between your teeth, while also helping receding gum lines heal. I’ve had close friends see drastic results by simply adding this to their daily routine.
  5. Dr. Tung’s Smart Floss – No more bleeding, sore gums! This amazing floss is gentle on gums, but removes so much more plaque. Smart indeed!
  6. MasterMedi Tongue Scarper for Adults – This two-pack will keep your tongue nice and healthy. If you haven’t tried tongue scraping, consider it! I really feel my mouth is fresher and I have less bad breath when using this regularly. BTW, it shouldn’t hurt. If it does, you might be doing it wrong.
  7. PUR Aspartame Free, 100% Xylitol Gum – The only gum I use! Xylitol is such a powerhouse for your teeth and I like to keep this with me when I’m on the go. I chew it for a few minutes after eating or drinking and it’s really helped keep my teeth and mouth healthy. Several flavors to choose from, but I like mint. Also, it doesn’t last as long as other gum, which is a plus for me, because I get a lot of jaw soreness if I mindlessly chew gum for too long.
  8. Boka Fluoride Free Whitening Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste  – While I do use different toothpastes from time to time, I keep coming back to Boka. I will say that I get nervous stopping fluoride because I’ve had so many teeth issues throughout my life, so I tend to go back and forth. This is a great toothpaste if you are comfortable using flouride free and hydroxyapatite, which is an amazing ingredient for teeth.

Ingredients To Look For:

teeth care

As more research comes out, and more dentists take a naturopathic/holistic approach to teeth care, we are seeing more and more options for what we use! Options are great, but make sure to do your research and also listen to your own body. I started using an expensive, natural toothpaste and at my next visit, I had another cavity. I stopped that one right away. Here are some powerful ingredients to include in your routine:

  1. Xylitol – Get it in gum, your mouthwash, you name it. Use it. It helps.
  2. Baking Soda – I saw a new dentist recently who lived abroad in a country that uses a lot more naturopathic remedies for ailments, including teeth. She recommended baking soda. She said to dip my toothbrush in it and then put on my toothpaste. I also found the mouthwash listed above that includes baking soda. It’s helping immensely with tooth sensitivity and gum recession!
  3. Hydroxyapatite – The new big player in the toothpaste game, but mostly in the US. It’s been widely used abroad for a loooot longer. This can be a great substitute if you’re looking to get off fluoride.

These are some of my favorite ingredients in products for the oral microbiome. Remember that our oral health can powerfully impact the health in the rest of our body. In fact, I saw a research study recently that said they are now linking so many cancers to oral health. Our mouth usually lets us know first if something is up and then it’ll trickle down into the rest of our body if we ignore it. Since I already have two autoimmune disorders: Sjogren’s and Lupus, I am not taking any chances. I am super proactive with my health and will try anything. What I share with you is my own tips. I’m not a doctor or a specialist. I’m a normal person, like you, trying to take care of myself and my kids in the best possible way. As always, trust your gut, do your own research, and know you’re always responsible for your own choices. These are my own personal experiences and are not a substitute for medical advice.
