21 Warm Winter Hair Colors You’ll Want Immediately

winter hair color

When cowboy copper took the hair color world by storm, I thought it was going to be a passing trend. While I love red hair in any shade, it’s a high maintenance color that fades fast and needs lots of upkeep, which usually makes it a short-lived endeavor. That has absolutely not been the case in the hair world. Reds are still going strong, but they’ve gotten richer, warmer, and more dramatic for winter. Plus, we’re seeing delicious chocolates and shimmering toffee caramel colors, too. I’ve been seeing so many gorgeous winter hair color pics on Instagram and thought I’d round them up and share them here, in case you’re looking for something to inspire your next trip to the salon.

Going red is definitely an investment, so I’m sharing some of my favorite products and tips at the end of the post for keeping your reds rich as long as possible. I’m linking to the original creator for all of the photos below. If you love someone’s work, feel free to click over to their page and let them know or scroll through more of their hair inspo to find exactly what you’re looking for. Because this is an image heavy post, some images may take a few seconds to load. I have no control over the speed of the server, so please be patient 🙂

 Gorgeous Winter Hair Color Inspo:

1. Rich Chocolate with Red Balayage by @hair.by.jessv:

This is stunning. There might be some lightening involved on the balayage to get the red to pop this much, but it’s not going to be as damaging as bleach all over the hair. Love the warmth and the way the colors catch the light.

2. Puple Toned Black by @stylelushsalon:

Caring for Colored Hair:

One great thing about going with warmer tones is that they don’t damage hair as much as going blonde. In fact, my hair looks healthier than ever since I switched to darker hair colors about a year ago. I need less products and its much lower maintenance to keep my hair healthy, too. But, if you want to keep those red colors from fading, you’ll want to make sure you’re using the right products for hair. And, as always, protect hair from heat with heat protectants, use oils to keep hair shiny and moisturized, and apply the occasional hair mask for extra love.

Here’s some of my favorites:

  • I love a good hair mask and I’ve tried a lot of them.
  • Here’s 8 great products to encourage hair growth and keep hair healthy.
  • Always use a heat protectant when heat styling. Some of them have style memory so that for a couple days after, you just need to use a quick blast of a hair dryer and the style will bounce back. This has been my favorite lately.
  • Let your hair air dry when possible. I wrote a whole post on how to air style hair so it’s not frizzy.
  • Or, you can use heatless curl stylers to avoid hot tools. Here’s a great heatless curls set with great reviews.
  • Use a hair oil through the middle and ends of your hair the night before you wash your hair. If you are close to a Trader Joe’s, they have a hair oil that is under $10 and I really love it. Just don’t put it on your scalp or it’ll make your hair really oily. Or, I will put this oil through the middle and ends of my hair on the last day before I shampoo and I’m wearing my hair in a ponytail or messy bun.
  • Use a color safe shampoo and conditioner that won’t strip color. There are a lot of good options out there, so use what works for your hair. Here’s one that I keep going back to.

If you want to add some reddish color to your hair without a permanent hair dye, check out my new review on the Auburn Spice Glaze Super Hair Gloss. So pretty!

Healing Hair From the Inside Out:

When trying to heal damaged hair or keep hair healthy, start from the inside out. Consider putting collagen in your water or tea. I like Vital Proteins. It dissolves quickly and is tasteless. I drink a scoop a day in a cup of tea. It really helps with healthier, thicker hair growth that can withstand styling and coloring. This collagen helps my hair and nails grow faster and I do see a difference with wrinkles, too. See my full review of it here.
